Transition is going from one place to another, one thought to another or, in this case, one style to another. In transitional style, we go from the traditional to the contemporary, or better still, blend the two together. This style is simple and sophisticated with straight and rounded lines, as well as graphic and textured fabrics and finishes. As with contemporary style, color is lacking. But traditional colors like neutrals, dark browns, taupes, and tans add a feeling of serenity. This can translate into a mixed balance of masculine and feminine elements.
Transitional furniture will bring comfort and minimalism together, along with attractive styling. It joins clean lines with fancy curves, natural wood finishes with smooth, brushed metals. Furniture is ample but not intimidating in size, lacking ornamentation and decoration and keeping to the simple, yet sophisticated.
Choose from a range of geometric and graphic patterns to classic, textured solids when choosing upholstery, accessories, and drapery. This is a blended interior, even in architectural design, which should reflect open, multitasking areas and spaces. Although the room will carry a contemporary look of minimalism, the transitional allows for a burst of unexpected color in accessories. Texture can also add the unexpected.
In traditional style, a dark sofa of deep brown is typical; but transitional style allows for the olive green corduroy sofa with creamy cotton pillows. Ultra suede, pliable leathers and nubby chenille not only supply the neutral colors of contemporary design, but contribute to the textures for a perfect blend of the masculine and feminine.
Remember, accessories need to remain at a minimal. Keep to clean, uncluttered lines. Make your selections carefully. A potted orchid in a window archway and a white, matted, black and white photo, framed in silver or black and centered over the mantle will create the perfect transition in a room.
If you are drawn to the serene feeling of traditional style and enjoy the smooth minimal lines of contemporary style, you will take pleasure in remodeling or decorating the transitional way. The main concern is to use good judgment and careful selection when it comes to line, scale, and drama. Be sure to look at our photo gallery for ideas.
